The Packers beat Panthers 27-19 on Thursday Night Football at Lambeau Field, surviving a sloppy start, a fourth-quarter rally and a frightening night for their top receiver to open Week 8 with a win. Green Bay improved to 5-3. Carolina fell to 3-4.

Jordan Love did most of the damage through the air. He finished 30 of 41 for 288 yards, three touchdowns and one interception, good for a 106.6 passer rating. His touchdown passes covered 12 yards to Tucker Kraft, 24 yards to Matthew Golden and 4 yards to Josh Jacobs, and Jacobs also scored on a 1-yard run.

The night started badly for Green Bay. Coleman Owen fumbled the opening kickoff, Carolina recovered at the Green Bay 29, and Ryan Fitzgerald kicked a 39-yard field goal for a 3-0 Panthers lead. The Packers answered with an eight-play, 56-yard drive capped by Love’s touchdown pass to Kraft, although the extra point missed, leaving Green Bay ahead 6-3.

Carolina went back in front early in the second quarter when Chuba Hubbard scored on a 1-yard run to finish a 65-yard drive, making it 10-6. The Packers then produced the drive that changed the game — and the night’s most memorable moment.

How the Packers beat Panthers 27-19

Love hit Christian Watson with a 53-yard pass that keyed a 90-yard scoring drive, but Watson was slow to get up after the play. He walked off with what was announced as a chest injury, then left the stadium by ambulance for testing at a local hospital. Jacobs’ 1-yard touchdown run put Green Bay back in front 13-10 with 6:33 left in the first half.

Green Bay extended the lead before halftime. Ty’Ron Hopper intercepted Bryce Young at the Carolina 43, and Love found Golden on a 24-yard touchdown pass with 1:46 left in the half for a 20-10 lead.

The Packers opened the second half by stopping Carolina on downs at midfield, then marched 50 yards to go ahead 27-10 on Love’s 4-yard touchdown pass to Jacobs with 7:30 left in the third quarter. Fitzgerald answered with a 50-yard field goal to make it 27-13.

Watson returned to the game in the third quarter, after his tests came back clear, and was greeted by a loud ovation at Lambeau Field. He finished with eight catches for 113 yards, the most by any receiver in the game. Golden added seven catches for 79 yards and a touchdown, and Kraft had six catches for 53 yards and a touchdown.

Carolina refused to go away. Young hit Jalen Coker with a 26-yard touchdown pass on fourth-and-3 with 5:37 left, but the two-point conversion failed, leaving the score 27-19. The Panthers got the ball back at their own 45 with 4:35 left after a Green Bay punt, but Young’s fourth-down pass fell incomplete. Carolina’s final possession, with 22 seconds left, ended when rookie Dani Dennis-Sutton sacked Young and Green Bay recovered a lateral on the last play.

Watson’s night, in his own words

Watson’s return was the story inside the result. After the game, he told the Prime broadcast that the experience was difficult and that he had hoped to stay on the field, but medical staff decided he needed hospital testing after he showed signs that required checking. He said doctors ruled out internal bleeding, and he later said he had a broken rib. He also thanked the Lambeau Field crowd for its reaction when he came back.

“It was surreal running out and just hearing the fans having my back like that,” Watson said, according to CNN’s report of the Prime broadcast interview. “It was tough any time that you have to go off the field or you think you’re injured, or you’re going down with something. So, just to come back out here and get that kind of response from the fans was incredible.”

Panthers cornerback Will Lee III, who made the diving stop on Watson’s 53-yard catch, was also hurt on the play and did not return after being carted off with a hamstring injury, according to CNN.

Analysis: Love carried the offense, the defense closed the game

The win said two things about Green Bay, and they point in opposite directions. On the positive side, Love was efficient and decisive when the run game offered almost nothing: the Packers managed just 66 yards on the ground, and Jacobs averaged 1.9 yards per carry on 21 attempts (39 yards). Love still moved the ball, spread it to Kraft, Golden and Watson, and avoided the kind of late collapse that has cost this team before.

On the other side, the same old problems showed up again. Green Bay turned the ball over three times, missed an extra point, fumbled the opening kickoff and let a 27-10 lead shrink to eight points in the fourth quarter, when Carolina outgained Green Bay 109-32. That is why this win feels encouraging rather than convincing: the Packers won because their quarterback and their pass rush — six sacks of Young, including Dennis-Sutton’s closing sack — were better than Carolina’s in the moments that mattered, not because they played a clean game.

For Carolina, the loss continued a difficult stretch. Young finished 23 of 41 for 209 yards, one touchdown and one interception, and was sacked six times. Hubbard ran for 81 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries and caught seven passes for 38 yards, but the Panthers could not finish drives early and could not get the stop they needed late, when Young threw incomplete on fourth-and-5 at midfield with 2:41 left in their best remaining chance.

What to watch next

The Thursday game gives both teams a mini-bye before their next games on Sunday, November 8. Green Bay travels to face the New England Patriots, while Carolina hosts the Denver Broncos. For the Packers, the immediate question is Watson’s status after a broken rib and a hospital trip, and whether a run game ranked last in the NFL at 59.9 yards per game entering Thursday can improve with the extra rest. For the Panthers, the question is whether a defense that gave up three touchdown passes can reset after two straight losses.
